Chapter 137
No.1
The next morning, Elisa was a general in her war room.
She sat at the desk in her hotel suite, dressed in a sharp silk blouse, her laptop open. On the screen were the dozen smiling, confident faces of the Elite Prep School's board of trustees, broadcast via a secure video link.
The meeting was a dream.
"Her test scores are, frankly, unprecedented,"said a woman with a severe haircut and a pearl necklace.
"And her fluency in French at such a young age is remarkable," added a man who looked like he was born in a country club. "A true global citizen."
Elisa answered their questions with calm, articulate grace. She spoke of Kayden's curiosity, her love of learning, her quiet determination. She was a mother, advocating for her child, and her sincerity was unassailable.
When the call ended, a wave of pure, unadulterated relief washed over her. It was done.Kayden was in. She could almost hear the laughter, see the joy on her daughter's face.
She immediately called Jewel. "It's done! They loved her! She's in!"

She decided in that moment. The rest of the expo
could wait. Alastair could handle it. She needed to go home. She needed to see Kayden, to hug her,to celebrate.
She called Alastair's assistant and booked the first flight back to New York. The private jet would be ready in an hour.
Sitting in the sterile quiet of the private airport lounge, waiting to board, Elisa felt a lightness she hadn't experienced in years. A future, a real one,was starting to take shape.
Her phone rang. The caller ID read 'Elite Prep School.'
She smiled, assuming it was the admissions office calling with the official, formal welcome. She answered, her voice bright. "Hello, this is Elisa Wilder."
There was a hesitant pause on the other end. "Ms.Wilder... this is Carol from the admissions office.I...I'm afraid I have some bad news."
The lightness in Elisa's chest vanished, replaced by a cold, heavy stone. "Bad news? What are you talking about? The board meeting was this morning."

"Yes, I know, and I am so, so sorry," the woman stammered, her voice thick with professional discomfort. "There seems to have been... a system glitch. A database synchronization error. I'm afraid Kayden Gilmore's acceptance was processed in error. The spot is no longer available."
Elisa's blood ran cold. "System glitch? What does
that mean, 'no longer available'? Where did it go?""It... it was reallocated," Carol whispered, as if afraid of being overheard.
Elisa's voice dropped, becoming dangerously quiet."Reallocated to whom?"
A long, painful silence. Then, a name.
"A student by the name of Tate Mills."The world stopped.
Tate.Mills.
Allena's brother.

The breath was stolen from Elisa's lungs. This wasn't a glitch. This was a hit. A targeted assassination of her daughter's future.
Rage, cold and pure and diamond-hard,flooded her veins. She gripped the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"Who made this decision?" she demanded, her voice a low, terrifying hiss.
"It was a decision from the board... there was a new, very significant donation... Ms. Wilder, you can appeal, but honestly..."
"I'll be therein person," Elisa said, and hung up.
She immediately redialed Jewel, her hands shaking with fury.
"They took her spot," she said, the words tasting like poison."They gave it to Allena's brother."
Jewel's explosion of profanity on the other end of

the line was biblical. "Those soulless monsters! They're going after a child now?"
"I'm on my way back," Elisa said, her voice like a shard of ice. "Meet me at the school tomorrow morning. We are getting that spot back."
She ended the call and sank back into the lounge chair, her body trembling. They had crossed a line.August and Allena had finally, irrevocably crossed a line from which there was no return. This wasn't about business or pride or a messy divorce anymore. They had put their hands on her child.2
She pulled out her encrypted phone. Her fingers flew across the screen, her mind a cold, calculating supercomputer. She bypassed the school's public website and began the painstaking process of breaching their internal donor database. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, weaving past three separate firewalls and exploiting a legacy backdoor she remembered from a security audit she'd done years ago for a non-profit. It took her several agonizing minutes, each second stretching into an eternity, before the final wall fell.
There it was. A new entry, dated yesterday afternoon.
Donation Source: The Chambers Foundation.
Amount: Undisclosed. Pledged.
August.

He had bought his mistress's brother a spot at the most exclusive school in New York, a spot that
belonged to his own daughter. He had used his money and his power to crush a five-year-old girl.
Elisa stared at the screen, the rage inside her so vast it became a perfect, crystalline calm.Anger was a hot, messy emotion. This was something else.
This was a declaration of war.
She knew what she had to do. You don't fight a tank with a pistol. You fight it with a bigger tank.
She dialed Alastair. He picked up on the first ring.
"I need a weapon," Elisa said, dispensing with all pleasantries.
"What happened?" Alastair's voice was instantly alert.

"August stole Kayden's spot at Elite Prep. Gave it to Allena's brother."
A string of curses from Alastair's end. "What do you need?"
"I need everything you have on Allena Mills 'personal finances," Elisa said, her voice precise."Every shell corporation, every questionable investment, every offshore account. I need a dossier so toxic it could melt steel."①
There was a beat of silence as Alastair processed the request. "You're going after Germaine," he said,a note of awe in his voice. "You're not going to fight August. You're going to use his mother as a shield and a sword."
"He crossed a line, Alastair," Elisa whispered.
"The file will be in your encrypted inbox in five minutes," Alastair said. "Burn them to the ground,Faye."
