Chapter 181

Elisa lowered the encrypted phone from her ear.She slid the device deep into the pocket of her white coat. The sterile air of the supply closet smelled of iodine and bleached cotton, but all she could taste was the metallic tang of absolute, irreversible destruction.

She pushed the door open and stepped back into the chaotic hum of the emergency room corridor.

She did not look toward the triage desk. She did not look toward the pediatric bay where August was playing the devoted father.

She turned her back on it all and began the slow walk toward the staff locker room to end her shift.

Before she reached the corner, a horrific crash shattered the background noise of the hospital.

It was the distinct, piercing sound of heavy glass and expensive electronics smashing against a linoleum floor. The noise came directly from the VIP observation suite at the end of the hall. A rapid,high-pitched alarm immediately began to shriek.

Elisa stopped. The muscles in her jaw tightened. She changed direction, her rubber-soled shoes making no sound as she approached the half-open door of the VIP suite.

She pushed the door open.

The room was a disaster zone. Tate Mills, seven years old and supposedly burning with a severe viral fever, was standing on top of the hospital bed.He held a heavy stainless steel medical tray in his hands. With a vicious grunt, he hurled it at the wall -mounted vital signs monitor. The screen shattered, raining sharp plastic and glass down onto the floor.

Allena sat on the plush leather sofa in the corner. She was not stopping him. She had one hand resting over her bandaged forehead, but her lips were parted in a soft, indulgent laugh. She was actually watching her brother destroy a hospital room with a look of fond amusement.

A young ER nurse rushed forward, her hands raised in a desperate attempt to calm the boy.

Tate spun around. He grabbed the heavy, solid plastic paddle of a portable defibrillator from the crash cart next to the bed. He threw it with all his might directly at the nurse.

The heavy paddle struck the young woman squarely in the forehead. She let out a sharp cry of pain, stumbling backward and clutching her face as a red welt instantly formed.

Elisa stood in the doorway. The temperature in her veins dropped to absolute zero.

She did not rush forward to grabthe boy. The rigid carbon-fiber brace strapped tightly around her lower spine made sudden, violent movements impossible. Instead, she took one calm half-step

backward.

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out her phone.

She opened the camera application, switched it to high-definition video, and hit record. She held the lens steady, capturing Tate ripping an IV pole down and Allena sitting on the couch, doing absolutely nothing to intervene.

No.3

Tate caught movement in his peripheral vision. He stopped tearing at the bedsheets and looked toward the door. He recognized the blue scrubs and the dark eyes above the surgical mask. It was the woman he hated.

His face twisted into an ugly sneer. He grabbed a heavy, full glass bottle of sterile saline solution from the bedside table. He pulled his arm back and hurled it directly at Elisa's head.

Elisa saw the projectile coming. She shifted her weight to the left, but the heavy brace restricted her torso. She could only tilt her neck.

The heavy glass bottle missed her face by an inch.It slammed into the metal doorframe right next to her shoulder and exploded. Saline water and sharp glass shards rained down on her white coat. The deafening crack of the impact made her ears ring, and she felt the icy shock of the liquid soaking through the fabric to her skin, but the hand holding the phone remained perfectly steady.

Allena finally stood up. She walked toward the center of the room, her heels crunching on the

broken glass. She looked at Elisa holding the phone and let out a scoff of pure, aristocratic disgust.

"Put that away, you pathetic loser," Allena sneered, her voice dripping with class contempt. "He is a child. He is sick and frustrated. You people are paid to clean up our messes. So get a broom and do your job."

Elisa did not speak. She kept the camera perfectly steady, recording every syllable of Allena's arrogant, ugly demand.

Heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the hallway behind Elisa.

No.4

August Chambers strode toward the room, carrying two steaming cups of coffee from the hospital cafeteria. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the shattered glass spilling out into the corridor and Elisa standing in the doorway.

Allena saw August. The arrogant sneer vanished from her face in a fraction of a second. Her eyes widened, and her breathing became rapid and shallow.

She stumbled forward, carefully avoiding the glass, and threw herself against August's chest.

"August," Allena whimpered, her voice trembling with fabricated terror. "The nurse was so rough with him. She tried to force a needle into his arm and it scared him. He just panicked."

August dropped the coffee cups. They spilled dark liquid over his expensive leather shoes. He wrapped his arms around Allena, pulling her close, his face tight with concern.

Then, he turned his head and looked at Elisa. The concern vanished, replaced by a look of absolute, venomous hatred.

"Get out," August commanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Get a cleaning crewv in here immediately, and then get out of my sight."

Elisa pressed the stop button on her screen. She slipped the phone back into her pocket. She did not argue. She did not defend the young nurse who was still crying in the corner.

She turned around and walked three steps to the nurses' station terminal located just outside the bay.She logged in with her basic floor credentials and accessed the hospital's public procurement catalog, selecting the exact models of the FDA-approved cardiac monitor and the specialized defibrillator unit that Tate had just destroyed in his tantrum. She hit print.

The small thermal printer buzzed. A long, white receipt spooled out.

Elisa tore the paper from the machine. She walked back to the doorway. August was still holding Allena, glaring at her.

Elisa raised her hand and slapped the long receipt flat against the center of August's soaked dress

shirt.

"Destruction of FDA-certified life-saving medical equipment is a federal felony," Elisa said. Her voice was completely flat, devoid of any human emotion."The replacement cost for the central monitoring system and the defibrillator is three hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars.Payable immediately to the hospital administration. Or I hand the video of your nephew assauting a medical worker to the police."

August looked down at the paper stuck to his chest. The sheer audacity of the demand made the veins in his neck bulge. His jaw locked.

"You are out of your mind," August hissed, stepping toward her. "You think a pittance like that means anything to me? Simon will have it wired before you can even file a report."

Before he could take another step, a sharp, piercing alarm erupted from his pocket.

It was not a standard ringtone. It was the maximum -priority, encrypted red alert from his private secure phone.

August froze. The anger on his face flickered, replaced by a sudden, sharp confusion. He pulled the phone fromn his pocket and answered it.

"Speak," August barked.

Through the quiet hallway, Elisa could hear the frantic, high-pitched voice of Simon, August's chief of staff.

"Mr. Chambers," Simon stammered, his voice

completely devoid of its usual professional calm."Wall Street just opened. We are under attack. A massive, coordinated short-selling volume just hit our core tech and medical holdings. It is a

bloodbath."

August's pupils dilated. The hand holding the phone gripped the plastic so hard his knuckles turned white.

"How much?" August demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

"One billion dollars in market cap evaporated in the first three minutes," Simon said, sounding like he was suffocating. "The exchange is about to trigger a circuit breaker. Sir, they are burning us to the ground."

August lowered the phone slowly. He did not look at Allena. He looked straight ahead, his eyes locking onto Elisa.

He saw the pale skin, the cheap blue scrubs, and the dark, bottomless eyes staring back at him.A horrific, impossible realization began to claw its way up his throat.

Elisa looked at the man who had ruined her life. She looked at the empire crumbling around his feet. The corners of her mouth twitched upward into a slow, devastating smnile.

She did not make a sound. She simply mouthed two words, clear enough for him to read her lips.

Happy bankruptcy.

Elisa turned around. She walked away down the long, bright corridor, leaving August Chambers standing in a puddle of spilled coffee and broken glass, staring into the abyss.
