Chapter 183

The sharp, chemical stench of industrial bleach and rubbing alcohol dragged Elisa back to consciousness.
She opened her eyes. The harsh fluorescent lights of a hospital ceiling burned her retinas. She blinked, trying to clear the gray fog from her brain.
She was lying flat on her back on a stiff mattress.A thick, restrictive cervical collar was wrapped around her neck, and the familiar, agonizing pressure of her carbon-fiber brace was still locked around her torso.
She tried to move her right hand. A sharp pinch stopped her. A clear plastic IV tube was taped to the back of her hand, dripping a steady stream of cold fluid into her vein.
Jewel was sitting in a plastic chair next to the bed.Her eyes were bloodshot, and her hands were trembling as she gripped her phone.
Seeing Elisa open her eyes, Jewel immediately hit the red call button on the wall.
"You're awake," Jewvel breathed, her voice cracking."Don't move. Please don't move."
A doctor in a white coat hurried into the room. He checked the monitors above the bed and shined a penlight into Elisa's eyes.

"You suffered a severe acute neurogenic shock, Ms Wilder," the doctor said, his voice grim. "The physical trauma to your L4 disc triggered a massive pain response that shut your system down. The painkillers are masking it right now, but if you da not remain completely immobilized for the next forty-eight hours, you will face permanent nerve damage."
Elisa stared at the ceiling. Permanent nerve damage.
She didn't have forty-eight hours. She didn't even have forty-eight minutes.
"The gallery," Elisa whispered, her voice a dry, scratchy croak.
Jewel leaned in close. "I hired private security. They are standing at the front doors of the Ainsworth building right now. They turned Arthur Sinclair's liquidation team away an hour ago. We bought some time."
Elisa closed her eyes. Her brain began to calculate, trying to find a legal loophole, a financial maneuver, anything to stop the Sinclair trust from seizing the property.
The heavy wooden door of the private hospital room swung open with a loud click.
The sharp, rhythmic clack of expensive stiletto heels hit the linoleum floor. The smell of a heavy, aggressive floral perfume instantly overpowered the scent of bleach.

Allena walked into the room.
She wore a pristine, tailored Chanel suit. A delicate French netting hat sat perfectly on her head, completely concealing the bandages from her stairwell fall. She looked radiant, victorious, and utterly untouched by the chaos of the morning.
Jewel shot out of her chair. She stepped between the bed and Allena, her fists clenched.
"Get out," Jewel snarled. "You are not allowed in here."
Allena tilted her head, her eyes locking onto Jewel with a chilling, predatory gleam. "Jewel," Allena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, silken purr."If you do not want your little independent production company to receive a barrage of bankruptcy lawsuits from the Chambers legal department by tomorrow morning, you will walk out of this room right now. I am only here to speak with Elisa." Jewel's face flushed with absolute rage, her hands gripping the back of the chair, but the threat was real and devastatingly precise. She looked at Elisa, who slowly gave her a faint, reassuring nod. Jewel gritted her teeth, grabbed her tote bag, and stormed out of the room, her footsteps echoing loudly. Allena calmly pushed the heavy door shut until the lock clicked securely into place.
Allena stood alone at the foot of Elisa's bed. She looked down at the pale, immobilized woman trapped under the hospital blankets. A slow, toxic smile spread across Allena's face.
She reached into her designer handbag. She pulled out a heavy ring of antique brass keys.
She held them up in the harsh light. They jingled with a sharp, metallic sound.

They were the master keys to the heavy oak doors of the Ainsworth Antique Gallery.
Elisa's heart monitor immediately began to beep faster. The sound echoed in the quiet room. Her breath caught in her throat.
"Your private security guards were very tough,"Allena said, her voice sickly sweet. "But they are not authorized to stop the legal owner of the property."
Allena walked slowly to the side of the bed. She leaned over the metal railing, bringing her face inches from Elisa's.
"Do you really think my father could just bypass the trust laws and seize a secured building in three hours?" Allena whispered.
Elisa stared into Allena's eyes. The cold dread pooling in her stomach turned into solid ice.
"He couldn't," Allena said, her smile widening into a display of pure malice."But August could."
The name hit Elisa like a physical blow to the chest.

"August's lawyers filed an emergency Waiver of Recourse this morning," Allena continued, relishing every word. "He legally surrendered your marital claim to the gallery's holding company. He handed the property directly to the Sinclair trust. He swept
the legal path completely clear for me."
Allena stood up straight. She tossed the brass keys into the air and caught them.
"He gave me your mother's grave, Elisa," Allena laughed. "Just to make me smile."
The absolute, unfathomable betrayal shattered the last remaining barrier in Elisa's mind.
August had not just stood by. He had actively, legally handed the knife to her enemies. He had sold her grandfather's legacy to protect the woman who had faked a fall down the stairs.
A raw, guttural sound tore its way out of Elisa's throat. It was the sound of a dying animal.
The heart monitor shrieked a continuous, frantic alarm.

Elisa ignored the doctor's warning. She ignored the threat of paralysis. But she did not move. The rage was too vast, too cold for a physical outburst. It coiled in her chest, a serpent of ice. She stared at the keys in Allena's hand, and then her eyes, devoid of all warmth, met Allena's.
"Thank you, Allena," Elisa whispered, her voice a terrifyingly calm rasp against the frantic beeping of the monitor. "You just handed me the one thing l was missing."
"What's that?" Allena sneered, confused by the lack of a hysterical breakdown.
Elisa's lips curled into a smile that did not reach her eyes. It was a smile of pure, apocalyptic certainty.
"A reason to burn his entire world to the ground,"Elisa said. "He gave you a building. He just gave me his life."
Allena jumped back, startled by the sudden, chilling shift in Elisa's demeanor. She looked at the bloodless face on the pillow and the dead eyes staring through her. She felt a sudden, primal spike of fear.
Allena let out a sharp, mocking laugh to cover her unease.
"Look at you," Allena sneered. "A pathetic, broken

dog. You couldn't keep your husband, and you couldn't keep your family's trash. You are nothing."Allena turned around. She adjusted her Chanel jacket, her heels clicking rhythmically as she walked to the door. She unlocked it and stepped out into
the hallway.
The door closed.
Jewel rushed back in, screaming for a nurse as she saw the frantic heart monitor.
Elisa lay perfectly still on the bed. The physical pain in her back was a roaring fire, but inside her chest, there was only a vast, freezing void.
The anger was gone. The betrayal was gone.
All that remained was the absolute certainty that August Chambers had to die.①
