Chapter 215

The morning sun broke over the Miami horizon, casting long, sharp shadows across the marble floors of the Four Seasons.

Elisa stood inside the guest room. She pressed her ear against the heavy wood of the door. The penthouse outside was completely silent. August had either left or was sleeping in the master bedroom.

She unlocked the deadbolt with a soft click and slipped out into the hallway.

She was still wearing the burgundy evening gown from the night before, its heavy fabric hiding the rigid carbon-fiber brace that was the only thing keeping her shattered L4 disc stabilized. The expensive fabric was deeply wvrinkled. Her fever had broken during the night, leaving her skin pale and covered in a cold, clammy sweat. Her body ached with a deep, bone-weary exhaustion, every step sending a dull, sickening throb up her spine.

She bypassed the main elevators and slipped into the concrete service stairwell. She walked down one flight of stairs to the VIP executive lounge on

the floor below. She needed to use a secure landline to call Alastair.

The lounge was empty and quiet. The only sound was the low hum of the commercial espresso machine behind the bar.

Elisa walked toward the heavy black telephone sitting on the mahogany counter.

"You look like hell, Faye."

The harsh, gravelly voice came from the deep shadows of a leather booth in the corner.

Elisa froze. She slowly turned her head.

Preston Vance was sprawled across the leather cushions. He looked worse than she did. He was wearing the same tuxedo shirt from last night, now stained and unbuttoned. A half-empty bottle of vodka sat on the table in front of him. He had been drinking all night, consumed by the rage of his ruined Aston Martin.

Preston grabbed his glass and stood up. He swayed slightly, his bloodshot eyes scanning her wrinkled dress and pale face. A nasty, triumphant sneer twisted his lips.

"So," Preston slurred, taking a slow step toward her. "Did you spend the whole night on your knees

for Chambers? Did you swallow your pride and beg him for the three hundred million? Because you sure look like you got used up and thrown out."

The crude, disgusting insult hit Elisa's ears.

She didn't feel anger. She felt a sudden, crystal-clear realization. August hadn't just rejected Preston's money; he had actively fed Preston a sexually degrading lie to ensure Preston would never do business with her again. August had tried to burn her last bridge.

Elisa took a deep breath. She reached into the pocket of her dress.

She pulled out her shattered, waterlogged smartphone. She walked directly up to Preston's table and dropped the ruined piece of metal onto the glass surface. It hit with a dull, heavy thud.

Preston stopped walking. He looked dowNn at the dead phone, his brow furrowing in confusion.

"My phone was thrown into the bottom of a swimming pool yesterday afternoon," Elisa stated. Her voice was completely flat, carrying the clinical precision of an autopsy report. "I was physically locked inside that penthouse by August Chambers. He engaged a communications jammer to cut me off from the outside world."

She looked directly into Preston's bloodshot eyes.

"The man you spoke to on the phone yesterday was a controlling psychopath who fabricated a disgusting lie to ensure Aethel Intelligence goes bankrupt," Elisa said coldly. "He used you, Mr.Vance.He played you for a fool just to punish me."

Preston stared at the ruined phone. The gears in his alcohol-soaked brain slowly began to turn.

He remembered the heavy oak door. He remembered August hiding inside. And he remembered the massive, jagged scratch down the side of his three-million-dollar car.

The puzzle pieces violently slammed together.

August hadn't won the girl. August was a desperate, unhinged man trying to cage a woman who hated him, and he had destroyed Preston's car just to throw a tantrum.

A strange, dark silence fell over the lounge.

Preston stared at the ruined phone, his drunen mind struggling to process the information. He stumbled back to the table and grabbed a pitcher of ice water, splashing the freezing contents onto his face. The shock of the cold, combined with Elisa's words, seemed to cut through the alcoholic

fog. He shook his head, his eyes slowly focusing, the drunken haze replaced by a cold, predatory clarity. He threw his head back and laughed. It was a harsh, barking sound, completely devoid of humor. It was the laugh of a predator who had just found a new, much larger target.

He slammed his empty vodka glass down on the table.

"Faye, you are a terrifying woman," Preston said. The drunken slur vanished from his voice, replaced by the cold, calculating tone of a Wall Street shark."You know exactly how to use my hatred to your advantage."

"I want to watch you take this money, build your Al,and publicly slaughter the Chambers Group on the NASDAQ. I want August to bleed." He pulled out his phone, his fingers moving with sudden, sober precision. "My lawyer is on standby. I'll have a clean term sheet sent to your secure email in the next five minutes. Sign it."

Elisa watched him tap the screen, her heart giving a single, hard thump against her ribs.

She didn't smile. She didn't show relief. She pulled her secondary work tablet from her bag, opening the encrypted email the moment it arrived. She quickly scanned the core clauses on the glowing

screen, ensuring the equity dilution was standard. It was.

She used the digital stylus to sign the name Faye with sharp, aggressive strokes.

She hit send, forwarding the executed document directly to his legal team.

"The funds must be wired into Aethel's holding account within forty-eight hours," Elisa commanded, her tone pure business. "Or the equity transfer is void."

Preston picked up the paper. He looked at her pale, fierce face. Old habits died hard. He reached his hand out, aiming to trail his fingers down her cheek.

Elisa didn't blink. A half-full cup of black coffee sat on the table, still steaming. She slowly slid it across the polished wood until it stopped inches from his outstretched hand. The heat radiated off the ceramic. "Don't make me teach you what a third-degree burn feels like," Elisawhispered."Keep your hands to yourself."

Preston yanked his hand back, holding his palms up in surrender. Once Preston stepped back, a wave of dizziness washed over Elisa, and she had to grip the edge of the table to steady herself. The adrenaline was the only thing keeping her upright,

but the iron grip of the brace held her shattering spine in place. "Strictly business."

The heavy glass doors of the lounge suddenly pushed open.

Alastair Cromwell strode into the room, flanked by two massive security guards. He looked exhausted and frantic. When he saw Elisa standing there, safe, the tension drained from his massive shoulders. He crossed the room in three strides and pulled her into a tight, crushing hug.

Elisa patted Alastair's back. She looked over his shoulder, her eyes locking onto the elevator bank.

"Call the jet, Alastair," Elisa said, her voice dropping to a freezing temperature. "We are going back to New York. It's time to destroy Allena."
