Chapter 227

No.1

Elisa stood up quickly, grabbing Kayden's hand. She needed to get away from the sandpit, away from Allena's toxic glaring. She pulled Kayden toward a quiet, shaded wooden bench sitting beneath a massive wisteria trellis on the edge of the playground.

She sat down and reached into her oversized leather tote bag, pulling out a packet of wet wipes to clean the sand off Kayden's fingers.

A massive shadow suddenly fell over them, blocking out the morning sun.

Elisa's head snapped up.

August had followed them. He had completely abandoned Allena and Tate on the grass. He stood in front of the bench, his tall frame looming over them.

Before Elisa could tell him to leave, August slowly lowered his massive body. He crouched down on the grass, bringing his face perfectly level with Kayden's.

He stared at the little girl. Up close, the resemblance was even more terrifying. The shape of her jaw, the straight line of her nose, and those impossible,ice-blue eyes. His heart hammered against his ribs in a chaotic, painful rhythm.4

He forced his voice to be soft, trying to sound harmless. "What is your name, little one?"

Kayden didn't shrink back. She didn't hide behind Elisa. She sat perfectly straight on the bench. She looked directly into August's eyes, analyzing him with a cold, calculating intelligence that was deeply unsettling in a five-year-old.

Elisa's lungs seized. She opened her mouth to answer for her, to shut down the conversation.

Kayden beat her to it.

"My name is Kayden," the little girl said. Her voice was crisp, clear, and completely devoid of fear.

Kayden. August repeated the name silently in his head. The sound of it sent a strange, painful ache through his chest.

He kepthis eyes locked on the child. "Is your mother

here today? Where is your father?"

No.4

The question was a live grenade. Elisa's fingers gripped the wet wipe so hard it tore in half. She braced herself for the explosion.

Kayden tilted her head slightly. She looked at August with absolute, chilling indifference.

"My mom is very busy," Kayden stated flatly. "And my dad is dead."

The word dead hit August like a physical sledgehammer to the sternum.

A bizarre, suffocating wave of grief and denial washed over him. It made absolutely no logical sense-he was looking at Jewel's chid-but his body reacted as if he had just been told his own heart had stopped beating.

No.5

He instinctively looked up at Elisa, his eyes silently begging for an explanation, a confirmation. Elisa turned her face away, staring blankly at the grass, letting the lie hang heavy in the air.

August looked back at Kayden. He swallowed hard. "I am...very sorry to hear that."

Kayden didn't accept the apology. Instead, she raised her small arm and pointed her finger directly across the lawn, aiming right at Tate, who was still whining and clinging to Allena.

"You're not that boy's real daddy," Kayden stated, her tonea simple, undeniable observation. She didn't ask, she told. "Mommy says pretending is wrong. Why are you pretending?"

Absolute, dead silence fell over the wisteria bench.

Elisa stared at her daughter in pure shock. She had never taught Kayden to say that. The child had deduced the hypocrisy entirely on her own.

August Chambers, the ruthless billionaire CEO who commanded thousands of employees and destroyed corporations for sport, was completely, utterly speechless. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. His face flushed with a deep, burning humiliation.

He was being eviscerated by a five-year-old.

"I..." August stammered, his voice dry and weak. "I am just taking care of him."

Kayden didn't blink. "But he is a bad boy. If you take care of bad boys, that means you are a bad man."

No.7

The brutal, black-and-white morality of the child sliced through all of August's complex PR justifications. He looked into those pure eyes and saw exactly what he was: a hypocrite protecting a monster.

A massive surge of vindication rushed through Elisa's veins. Seven years of suffering, and it took her five-year-old daughter ten seconds to verbally destroy him.

Before August could try to defend himself again, the loud crackle of the campus PA system echoed across the lawn.

"Attention parents," a cheerful voice announced."Please proceed to the indoor classrooms for the joint psychological evaluations."
