Chapter 287

The painkillers were a welcome, dulling wave, pushing the sharp edges of the pain back into a manageable thrum. Elisa's face was still a pale, drawn mask, but her eyes were clear, focused, and cold. She immersed herself in the digital world, the clean, unforgiving logic of code a balm to her shattered spirit. She worked with a feverish intensity, building new firewalls, encrypting data pathways, turning Aethel's network into an impenetrable fortress.

She was in the middle of rewriting the core access protocols for Project Chiron when Alastair burst into her office. He didn't knock. He slammed the door open, his face a ghastly shade of white.

"They're gone,Faye."

Elisa's fingers froze over the keyboard. She slowly lifted her head.

"All of them," Alastair said, his voice a strangled whisper. He threw a stack of papers onto her desk. They were resignation letters. "R&D Division Three. Our entire core algorithm team. Walked out half an hour ago. All of them."

He slammed his tist on her desk, rattling the monitor. "Apex. They poached every single one.Doubled their salaries, offered signing bonuses that could buy a house. This wasn't a negotiation. It was a slaughter."

Elisa looked at the names on the letters. People she had mentored. People she had trusted. A cold, heavy certainty settled in her stomach. This was Allena's revenge. Swift, brutal, and funded by the bottomless pockets of August Chambers.

"They've already announced it," Alastair continued, pacing her office like a caged animal. "Apex issued a press release. They're launching a new 'revolutionary' Al medicaI division. And they've appointed Allena Mills as the Chief Innovation Officer."

The title was a joke, a slap in the face. Allena couldn't innovate her way out of a paper bag. But it didn't matter. They had the team. They had the PR.They were stealing her project, her legacy, right out from under her.

Elisa took a deep, steadying breath. Panic was a luxury she could not afford.

"Get our legal team on the phone," she said, her voice calm, the command cutting through Alastair's rage. "Every one of those employees signed a non-

compete agreement. This is a flagrant violation."

She stood up and reached for the simple black blazer hanging on the back of her chair. "I'm going to see their CEO."

"Faye, you can't!" Alastair protested. "They won't let you in the building!"

"They will," she said, her eyes like chips of flint. She walked out of the office, leaving Alastair to make the calls.

Thirty minutes later, she stood in front of the gleaming glass and steel monolith that was the Apex Therapeutics headquarters. It was a monument to corporate power, designed to intimidate.

It didn't work on her.

She walked through the revolving doors, her heels clicking with sharp authority on the marble floor. The cavernous lobby was bustling with people in expensive suits.

And standing right in the middle of it all, as if she had been waiting for her, was Allena.

She was surrounded by a small group of fawning executives, holding court like a queen. She saw Elisa and a slow, poisonous smile spread across her

face.

"Well, look what the cat dragged in," Allena said, her voice loud enough to draw the attention of everyone nearby. "Lost, little one? This is the big leagues. I don't think they have a place for interns here."

Elisa ignored the sycophants. Her gaze was fixed on Allena. "I'm here to see Declan Nash," she said, her voice cold and even. "You are in breach of contract. Your company is engaged in corporate espionage and theft of intellectual property."

Allena laughed, a high, brittle sound. "Declan is a very busy man. He doesn't have time to meet with the representatives of bankrupt, irrelevant little startups."

She took a step closer, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial, venomous whisper. "You really don't get it, do you? You can't win. You have your pathetic little lines of code. I have August Chambers. The game is already over."

"A man you have to drug and trap to get his attention?" Elisa shot back, her voice just as low."The power you lease from him can be revoked at any time.My power is my own."

The barb struck home. A flash of pure hatred

crossed Allena's face.

Just then, a set of privateelevator doors opened, and a man in his late fifties with silvering hair and a worried expression stepped out. Declan Nash.

"Mr. Nash," Elisa said, stepping forward, her voice returning to a formal, professional tone. "I am Faye,Chief Architect of Aethel Intelligence. We have a serious issue to discuss regarding the illegal poaching of my entire R&D team."

Declan Nash looked from Elisa's cold, determined face to Allena's smug one. He looked deeply uncomfortable. He was a CEO caught between a legal firestorm and the wrath of his most important investor.

He chose the path of least resistance.

"I'm sorry, Ms... Faye," he said, avoiding her eyes."I'm not at liberty to discuss personnel matters. All future communications will have to go through our legal department." He gave a curt, dismissive nod.

It was a complete stonewall. He was following August's orders. The rules didn't apply to them.

"So you admit to the theft," Elisa stated, her voice flat.

Allena stepped forward, her smile triumphant."

think the CEO has made himself clear," sne saia. She gestured to the security guards standing near the entrance. "Please show this woman out. She's disturbing the peace."

Two large guards in uniform began to walk toward Elisa.

"Don't touch me," she said, her voice sharp and commanding. The guards hesitated. "I can see myself out."

She turned her back on them, on Allena's gloating face, on Declan Nash's cowardly retreat. She held her head high, her spine straight as a steel rod. She would not give them the satisfaction of seeing her break.

She walked out of the building and stood at the top of the wide marble steps, the cold city wind whipping at her blazer. She looked back at the Apex logo, a cold fury building inside her.

They had taken her team. But they didn't have the key. The core of Project Chiron, the true genius of it, wasn't in a line of code they could steal. It was inside her head.

She pulled out her phone and sent a text to Alastair."File the injunction. Sue them for everything they have.Burn their cash reserves to the ground."

As she slipped the phone back into her pocket, a black town car with diplomatic plates pulled up to the curb. An elderly, distinguished-looking man with a mane of white hair and an aura of immense authority stepped out, flanked by his own security detail.

Elisa recognized him instantly from countless medical journals and keynote speeches.

Dr. Orville Prescott. A living legend. The godfather of modern pharmacology.

He was walking into Apex headquarters.

A new fire lit in Elisa's eyes. A new strategy began to form in her mind. August and Allena thought this was a corporate battle. They were wrong.

This was a scientific war. And she was about to bring out her biggest gun.
