Chapter 88
No.1
The service corridor leading to the side exit of The Plaza Hotel was dimly lit and smelled of industrial cleaner.
Elisa pushed Phineas's wheelchair rapidly over the thin carpet. Her jaw was locked so tight her teeth ached. She just needed to get him into a taxi. She needed to get him back to the safety of the memory care center before his fragile mind completely shattered from the stress.
As they approached the main public lobby intersection leading to the exit doors, a loud, obnoxious shrieking echoed down the hall.
Tate Mills, wearing a miniature custom tuxedo, had slipped past the hotel staff and came sprinting around the corner from the public lounge. He was holding a plastic laser gun that flashed bright red lights, completely ignoring the frantic concierge trying to corral him.
He was running full speed, looking backward over his
shoulder.
"Watch out!" Elisa shouted.
She yanked the heavy wheelchair backward with all her strength, but it was too late. Tate slammed hard into the side of the metal wheel.
The impact sent the seven-year-old sprawling onto the floor. The wheelchair violently jerked. Phineas let out a terrified cry, his frail body slumping sideways against the armrest.

Elisa immediately dropped to her knees, checking her grandfather. "Grandpa! Are you okay? Does anything hurt?"
Phineas was shaking, clutching his chest, but he nodded weakly.
Elisa stood up. The adrenaline and humiliation from the Oak Room boiled over into pure, protective rage. She looked down at Tate, who was sitting on the floor, rubbing his knee.
"Be careful!" Elisa snapped, her voice sharp and authoritative. "You could have seriously injured him."
Tate didn't look apologetic. The spoiled, entitled brat
looked up at Elisa with a face full of pure, learned malice. He scrambled to his feet, dusting off his expensive tuxedo pants.
"Watch where you're going, you stupid lady!" Tate yelled. He pointed his plastic laser gun directly at Phineas's face. "He smells gross! My mom says you guys are just poor bloodsuckers! Why doesn't that old zombie just die already?!"
The words hung in the stale air of the corridor.
Elisa's vision went completely red. The absolute, unforgivable cruelty of the child-parroting the exact venom of his mother and sister-snapped the final thread of her self-control.

She moved with a speed that was almost inhuman. She didn't strike him. Instead, her hand shot out and clamped around the boy's wrist. Her fingers applied precise, calculated pressure to a nerve cluster just below his palm. Tate let out a yelp of surprise, not pain, as the plastic gun clattered from his suddenly numb fingers onto the floor.
Elisa leaned down, her face inches from his, her voice a terrifyingly cold whisper that cut through his
childish bluster.
"If you ever use that mouth to speak about my family again," she hissed, "I will make sure you can't speak at all."
For one second, there was absolute silence.
Then, Tate, shocked and frightened by the cold threat more than any physical blow, opened his mouth and unleashed a deafening, hysterical wail.He clutched his tingling wrist, his face turning red.
The heavy doors at the end of the hall burst open.
Arthur Sinclair and Rosalind, who had been searching for the boy, rushed into the corridor. When Rosalind saw Tate screaming on the floor, she let out a piercing shriek and threw herself onto her knees, pulling the boy into her arms.
"Tate! Oh my god, my baby!" Rosalind screamed. She looked up at Elisa, her eyes wide with demonic fury. "What did you do to him?! You monster!"

Arthur Sinclair's face turned a violent, mottled purple. He charged forward, his massive fists clenched.
"You psychotic bitch!" Arthur roared. He raised his heavy hand, fully intending to strike Elisa across the face.
Elisa didn't flinch. She didn't step back.
With terrifying speed, her hand shot up. She caught Arthur's wrist in mid-air. Her fingers locked around his pulse point with the crushing, iron grip of a trained fighter.
Arthur gasped, shocked by the physical strength of the woman standing in front of him.
Elisa stepped into his space. She looked directly into the eyes of the man who had abandoned her.
"What's the matter, Mr. Sinclair?" Elisa hissed, her voice dropping to a surgical, lethal whisper."Are you going to strike me, just like you struck my mother when she begged you not to sell her sunflowers?"
The words hit Arthur like a bolt of lightning.
His entire body froze. His arm went limp in her grip.He stared dowwn into Elisa's face. He looked past the dark sunglasses, past the cold exterior, and saw the exact shape of her jaw, the exact curve of her

cheekbones. He saw the ghost of the woman he had left to die in the mountains twenty years ago.
"Elisa...?" Arthur breathed, his voice trembling with sudden, absolute shock.
Behind him, Rosalind's face drained of all color. She stopped comforting Tate. She stared at Elisa in pure, unadulterated terror. The secret she had buried for two decades had just been dragged into the light.
At that exact moment, August and Allena rushed around the corner.
They stopped dead in their tracks. August heard the name Sinclair. He looked at Arthur's shocked face, then at Elisa. A massive, tectonic shift of pure, unadulterated fury occurred in August's brain. He already knew the twisted bloodline-he had personally forced Elisa to play the loving sister to Allena in front of the press-but he never expected her to weaponize it here. She was dragging the family's most grotesque, buried secret into the open hallway, threatening to shatter the immaculate public facade he had spent millions building. The sheer, reckless audacity of her insubordination made him physically sick.
Allena grabbed August's arm, her face pale with panic. She knew it was over.
Arthur Sinclair recovered from his shock. His survival instinct kicked in. To acknowledge Elisa here, in front of everyone, would destroy his reputation and his marriage.
He violently yanked his arm out of Elisa's grip. His face twisted with ugly, desperate denial.
"You are insane!" Arthur shouted, pointing a shaking finger at her. "I don't know who you are! You are a violent, uneducated savage! You are no daughter of mine!"

Elisa looked at him. She didn't cry. She let out a slow, chilling laugh that made the hair on the back of August's neck stand up.
"You are absolutely right," Elisa said, her voice ringing with absolute, terrifying clarity. "My name is Elisa Wilder. My father died twenty years ago in the dirt. You people are nothing but parasites squatting in a stolen nest. You don't even have the right to speak my name."
She slowly turned her head and looked directly at
August.
August's chest was heaving. He stared at her, waiting for her to scream at him, to demand an explanation.
But Elisa just looked at him with eyes that were completely, totally dead.
"Mr. Chambers," Elisa said, her voice a flat, freezing monotone. "Your taste in garbage is truly spectacular. You and this family are a match made in hell."
August opened his mouth, but his throat was paralyzed. He couldn't speak. The absolute, final disgust in her eyes was a physical blade cutting the last cord between them.①
Elisa turned around. She grabbed the handles of the wheelchair. She pushed her grandfather past the stunned billionaires, her spine perfectly straight, walking out the side doors into the freezing New York night like a conquering queen leaving a burning city.

In the back of a speeding yellow taxi, Elisa held her grandfather's trembling hand.
A single, silent tear slipped out from beneath her
sunglasses and rolled down her cheek.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated.
She answered it.
"Faye," Alastair's deep, steady voice came through the speaker. "My security team has her. She is in the back of my armored car right now.She is completely safe."
Elisa closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The war was just beginning, but her heart was finally secure.
