Chapter 98
No.1
At exactly 9:50 AM the next morning, Elisa stepped
out of the elevator and into the sleek, glass-walled lobby of the Vance Law Firm in Midtown Manhattan. She was dressed for an execution. She wore a tailored,razor-sharp black suit. Her hair was pulled
back tight, and her face was a mask of absolute,
impenetrable calm.
She walked into the main conference room. She sat down at the head of the long mahogany table. In front of her sat a pristine, unsigned copy of the real divorce agreement and a heavy silver pen.
She folded her hands and stared at the door.
The digital clock on the wall flipped to 10:00 AM.The door did not open.

Elisa did not move. She did not check her phone. She simply waited, her breathing slow and measured.
The clock flipped to 10:30 AM. Still nothing.
At 11:00 AM, the heavy glass door finally swung open. Harvey Vance walked in. His face was grim, the lines around his mouth pulled tight with stress. He was holding a single sheet of paper-a fax transmission.
Harvey sat down next to Elisa. He slid the paper across the table.
"August is not coming," Harvey said heavily."Chambers Legal just faxed this over. They are officially rejecting the agreement. They referred to your demands as a 'delusional farce' and stated Mr.Chambers will not participate in an extortion attempt."
Elisa frowned. Her eyebrows pulled together in genuine confusion.
"Extortion?" Elisa repeated. "The contract waives all alimony. It demands nothing but a clean break. How is that extortion?"

Before Harvey could answer, Elisa's phone vibrated violently on the table.
It was a message from Jewel. It containeda single screenshot from Instagram.
Elisa tapped the image. The screen expanded to show an Instagram Story posted by Devon Browning just twenty minutes ago.
The act of destruction back at the hospital had filled the hollow void in August's chest with a familiar, comforting rage. He needed a drink, a public display of power to reaffirm his control."Devon," he'd commanded, "We're going to The Oracle." He needed to broadcast this victory, to grind the humiliation of her absurd demands into dust under his heel.
The photo was taken inside a dimly lit, exclusive VIP club. In the center of the frame sat August. He was holding a crystal glass of whiskey, leaning back in a leather booth with an expression of supreme
arrogant victory.
But it was the foreground of the photo that made Elisa's blood run cold.

Scattered across the polished wood table was a pile of shredded paper. The jagged edges of the legal document were clearly visible.
Overlaid on the photo was a block of neon text typed by Devon: Boss just tore up the extortion letter. Getting rid of the greedy leech who tried to steal the company.Cheers!
Elisastared at the screen.
The physical sensation of the betrayal hit her like a sledgehammer to the chest. Her lungs seized. A hot, burning wave of absolute humiliation and rage rushed up her neck.
She finally understood. August hadn't read the real contract. He had read something else-something altered, something designed to make her look like a greedy, insane extortionist. And instead of questioning it, his massive ego had instantly accepted the narrative. He had shredded her attempt at a peaceful exit and was now using his friends to publicly humiliate her on social media.
A low, bitter laugh scraped its way out of Elisa's throat. The sound was so cold it made Harvey flinch.
She slammed the phone face down onto the mahogany table. The sharp crack echoed in the room.

"Fine," Elisa hissed, her eyes burning with black fire."He wants to play dirty. Harvey, file the lawsuit.Sue him for breach of the seven-year contract. Force him into open court."
Harvey let out a long, exhausted sigh. He tapped the bottom half of the fax paper.
"We can't, Elisa," Harvey said quietly. "Look at the second paragraph."
Elisa's eyes darted down the page.
Notice of Immediate Injunction: Asset Freeze.
"Chambers Legal filed an emergency injunction at 8:00 AM this morning," Harvey explained, his voice tight. "They accused you of 'marital asset dissipation.' The judge signed it. Every single bank account with your name on it-including the offshore trust holding the fifty million dollars-is completely frozen. You cannot move a single cent."Elisa's fingers curled into tight fists. Her fingernails dug into her palms.
She was trapped. August had cut off her air supply. He knew she needed money to maintain the Long Island safe house, to pay Kayden's massive medical bills at the private hospital, to survive. He was trying to starve her into submission.

Elisa closed her eyes. The image of Kayden's pale, stitched forehead flashed behind her eyelids.
She opened her eyes. The desperate mother was gone.Faye had taken the wheel.
"They think they can starve me out," Elisa
whispered, her voice dropping to a terrifying, mechanical frequency. "They think the law is their weapon."
She stood up. She grabbed her phone and her purse.
"Elisa, what are you going to do?"Harvey asked, standing up in alarmn. "We have to file a counter-motion. It will take weeks..."
"I don't have weeks," Elisa cut him off. She walked to the door. "I am going to handle this my way."

She pushed through the glass doors and marched out of the law firm.
She stepped into the elevator and hit the lobby button. As the metal doors slid shut, she pulled out her phone and dialed Alastair's secure line.
He answered immediately. "Faye."
"Open the Project Chiron backdoor," Elisa commanded. Her voice was a lethal, vibrating blade of pure cyber warfare. "August wants to play games with asset freezing? I am going to show him what absolute asset liquidation looks like."
The elevator doors opened. Elisa stepped out into the blinding Manhattan sunlight. The legal battle was over. The digital slaughter had just begun.6
