Chapter 178
No.1
The panic in Allena's voice on the phone was a physical irritant, scraping against August's already frayed nerves. He had spent the last three hours locked in a war room with his crisis management team, watching the Chambers Group stock ticker bleed red.
Vanguard Medical's PR team, in a desperate bid to control the narrative, had just released a second, highly sanitized statement. They claimed Allena was "stepping back from the project to focus on her recovery," completely omitting the academic expulsion and the looming police investigation.
It was a pathetic, transparent lie, and Wall Street knew it. The institutional investors were already smelling blood.
August ended the call wwith Allena, his jaw locked so tight his teeth ached. He didn't go to the hospital. He ordered his driver to take him directly to Aethel Intelligence.
Inside the Aethel building, the atmosphere was electric with the aftermath of the boardroom slaughter.
Elisa sat in her isolated cubicle, her fingers resting lighfly on her keyboard. She had just finished compiling the final security patches for Project Chiron, locking Vanguard out permanently.

She closed her eyes and let out a long, ragged exhale. The adrenaline that had fueled her through the hospital mob, the parking garage confrontation, and the boardroom execution was finally crashing.
The pain in her lower back was no longer a sharp stabbing sensation; it was a deep, nauseating ache that radiated down both her legs. The carbon-fiber brace felt like a cage of iron, restricting every breath. She was exhausted down to her marrow.
She packed her laptop into her leather tote, stood up stiffly, and began the slow walk toward the executive elevators.
The corridor was empty. The building had mostly cleared out for the night.
Elisa pressed the down button for the private, direct-
to-garage elevator. The stainless steel doors slid open with a quiet hum. She stepped inside the brightly lit cab and pressed the button for level B2.

The doors began to close.
Suddenly, a large hand, wrapped in the cuff of a bespoke suit and bearing a heavy Patek Philippe watch, shoved violently into the narrow gap.
The safety sensors tripped. The doors jerked back open.
August Chambers stepped into the elevator.
He brought the cold night air and the sharp scent of his cologne wth him. His face was a mask of dark, barely contained fury. His eyes were bloodshot, and the muscles in his neck were corded tight. He looked like a man who had been pushed to the absolute edge of his sanity.
Elisa didn't flinch. She simpoly took a half-step back, putting her spine against the cool metal wall of the elevator, her face completely blank.

The doors slid shut, sealing them in the small, descending box.
"You gave a recording to the police," August said. His voice wasn't a yell; it was a low, vibrating growl that filled the small space.
"I provided evidence of a crime," Elisa replied, her tone as casual as if she were discussing the weather.
August lunged forward, closing the distance between them in a single step. He slammed his hand against the metal wall right next to her head, trapping her in the corner. His massive frame loomed over her, radiating heat and aggression.
"You are destroying the stock value of my entire company!" August roared, the control finally snapping. "You humiliated Allena in front of the board, and now you are trying to send my aunt to prison? Do you have any idea what you are doing to this family?"①
Elisa looked up at him. She didn't see a powerful billionaire. She saw a desperate, delusional man throwing a tantrum because he couldn't control the narrative anymore.

"Your aunt pushed a woman down a flight of stairs,"Elisa said, her voice dripping with icy contempt. "And
your precious fiancée lied to the police to frame me.l am not destroying your family, August. I am just holding up a mirror to the rot you've been protecting."
"Yoú did this out of spite!" August yelled, his face inches from hers. "Because you can't stand that l chose her!"
Elisa let out a sharp, genuine laugh. The sound was so full of absolute mockery that August physically recoiled.
"Chose her?" Elisa sneered. "You are welcome to .her. You deserve each other. A liarand a fool, bound together by fake tears and corporate fraud."
August's eyes blazed with a violent, irrational rage.He raised his hand, his fingers curling inward, as if he wanted to grab her by the shoulders and physically shake the defiance out of her.

Elisa's eyes narrowed into lethal slits. "Touch me,"she whispered dangerously, "and I will add assault to the list of charges your lawyers have to deal with tomorrow."
August's hand froze in mid-air. He stared at the cold,
untouchable woman in front of him, realizing with a sickening jolt that he had absolutely no power over her anymore.
Before he could drop his hand, a horrific, grinding screech of tearing metal echoed from the elevator shaft above them.
The sound was deafening.
Instantly, the floor dropped out from under them.

The elevator cab plummeted into a freefall. The sensation of absolute weightlessness hit Elisa's .stomach like a physical blow.
The bright overhead LED panels flickered violently, buzzed loudly, and then died completely.
The cab was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
The emergency braking system engaged with a violent, bone-jarring CRACK. The entire metal box shuddered violently, swinging wildly in the shaft.
Elisa's feet left the floor. Because of the rigid, unyielding carbon-fiber brace strapped to her torso, she had zero flexibility to adjust her center of gravity.
She was thrown violently forward into the absolute darkness, completely out of control, bracing for the shattering impact of the metal floor against her face.
