Chapter 179

The,darkness was absolute. The screech of the emergency brakes tearing against the guide rails was deafening.

Elisa was falling forward, her arms flailing in the pitch-black void, her rigid spine unable to twist or brace for the impact. She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the brutal collision with the metal floor that would surely shatter her fragile L4 disc.

The impact never came.

Instead, a massive, solid force slammed into her from the side.

Two powerful arms wrapped around her waist like bands of iron. August hadn't thought. He hadn't calculated the risk or remembered his fury. Driven by a primal, deeply ingrained instinct that completely bypassed his conscious hatred, his body reacted.

He yanked her backward with explosive force, twisting his own body to take the brunt of the fall.

August's back crashed violently against the metal wall of the elevator. A sharp, guttural grunt of pain ripped from his throat as the air was forced from his lungs.

But he didn't let go. He pulled Elisa flush against his chest, his right hand instantly coming up to cup the back of her head, burying his fingers in her short hair to protect her skull from whiplash.①

The elevator cab gave one final, violent shudder, groaning loudly before coming to a dead, suspended halt in the middle of the shaft.

Silence crashed down around them, broken only by the sound of their ragged, overlapping breathing.

Elisa was pressed tight against August's chest. The darkness amplified every sensation. She could smell the familiar, expensive cedarwood of his cologne, now mixed with the sharp, metallic tang of his sweat.

Beneath her cheek, pressed against his ruined shirt, she could hear his heartbeat. It was frantic, hammering against his ribs with the speed of a terrified animal. It wasn't the steady, controlled pulse of a cold-blooded CEO. It was the chaotic rhythm of

a man who had just been terrified of losing something.

For three seconds, suspended in the dark, the war between them ceased to exist. He was just a man holding her, protecting her with his own body. A disorienting wave of phantom familiarity washed over her, a hollow echo of a life she had already burned to ash.

August was gasping for air, his back throbbing from the impact. He felt the rigid, unnatural hardness of the brace strapped around her torso. He tightened his grip instinctively.

"Are you hurt?" August rasped, his voice a low, rough whisper in the dark. The genuine, raw panic in his tone was undeniable.

That voice. That tone. It was the trigger that shattered the illusion.

Elisa's brain snapped back to reality. The memory of him holding Allena in the bloody stairwell, the memory of him shoving her aside, flooded her mind like acid.

A wave of intense, physical revulsion washed over

her. She pushed her hands flat against his chest and shoved him away with all her strength.

"Don't touch me," Elisa hissed, her voice trembling with disgust.

She stumbled backward in the dark, her hands finding the opposite wall of the cab. She leaned against it, her breathing harsh and erratic.

August's arms fell to his sides. The sudden emptiness in his grasp brought his rational mind crashing back. The protective instinct vanished, instantly replaced by the cold, calculating panic of his collapsing empire.

A tiny, weak emergency LED light flickered on near the ceiling, casting a sickly green glow over the small space.

Elisa could see August's face. The raw terror was gone. The mask of the ruthless billionaire was back in place. He straightened his ruined tie, his posture stiffening.

"Listen to me," August said, his voice returning to its normal, authoritative cadence. "We are stuck here.Let's use this time to be practical."

Elisa stared at him, her stomach churning.

"I will wire twenty million dollars to any account you want," August said, his eyes cold and transactional in the green light. "From a trust in the Caymans. It will be untraceable."

The words hung in the stale air.

He had just saved her life on instinct, and in the very next breath, he was trying to buy her silence to protect the woman who had tried to destroy her. The hypocrisy was so profound, so deeply ingrained in his soul, that it was almost breathtaking.

Elisa looked at him. The last, lingering ghost of familiarity in her chest evaporated, leaving behind a void of absolute, freezing clarity.②

She let out a dry, rasping laugh.

"You really are pathetic," Elisa said, her voice echoing off the metal walls. "You think you can put a price tag on the truth? You think your money can wash away the fact that you are protecting a violent, lying parasite?"

August's face hardened. "It's twenty million, Elisa.

Don't be a fool. You have nothing."

"I have the truth," Elisa spat, pushing off the wall."And your money is as filthy and worthless as your promises. You are a stray dog, August. Barking at shadows while your house burns down."

August's fists clenched. He took a step toward her,his face twisting with rage. "You bitch, I will-"

A loud, metallic CLANG above them cut him off.

The emergency escape hatch in the ceiling was suddenly pried open with a heavy crowbar. A blinding beam of white light from a heavy-duty flashlight pierced the gloom of the cab.

"FDNY! Is anyone hurt down there?" a gruff voice called out.

A heavy**, rigid aluminum drop-ladder** was lowered through the hatch, clanking loudly until it hit the floor between them.

August looked at the ladder, then back at Elisa. He instinctively reached out his hand to help her up.

Elisa looked at his outstretched hand. She didn't say a word. She didn't even sneer. She simply stepped

around him. Knowing her rigid carbon-fiber brace made normal climnbing impossible, she grabbed the thick metal rungs and relied entirely on her upper body strength.

She' pulled herself up, keeping her injured spine perfectly straight as she climbed out of the broken, dark box, and left August Chambers standing alone in the shadows of his own making.
