Chapter 48

The reception ended with Elisa standing at the absolute pinnacle of the room's hierarchy.

She left the Federal Building through the VIP exit, the cool night air a welcome relief from the suffocating sycophancy of the crowd. She walked down the wide stone steps toward the valet parking zone.

A few moments later, the heavy glass doors opened again.

August and Allena walked out. Allena's face was a mask of pure, unadulterated misery. Her academic dreams had just been publicly slaughtered. August looked exhausted and furious, his hand wrapped in a white handkerchief stained with blood from the shattered glass.

They stood a few yards away from Elisa, waiting for their car. The silence between them was toxic.

A low, aggressive mechanical growl echoed down the street.

The valet pulled Elisa's dark agate grey Porsche 911GT3 up to the cub. The sleek, predatory lines of the car caught the ambient streetlights.

Elisa stepped forward, pulling a pair of dark sunģlasses from her bag despite the night sky. She liked the physical barrier they provided.

As she reached for the door handle, Allena's tear-filled eyes locked onto the rear of the Porsche.

She saw the custom New York license plate.

It read: FAYE 01.

Allena's brain, already fractured by jealousy and humiliation, snapped. The number one. A public declaration. In Allena's paranoid, deeply insecure mind, that '01' was not a model number or a sequence; it was a ranking. It was Faye screaming to the world that she was, and always would be, the primary. The original. Number one in the dynasty she was trying so desperately to infiltrate.

"You psycho!"

Allena's voice shrieked through the quiet valet area.

She lunged forward, ignoring her medical boot, and

slammed her hand flat against the driver's side window of the Porsche, blocking Elisa from opening the door.

"Are you that desperate?!" Allena screamed, her face twisting into an ugly mask of rage. "A 'Number One'license plate? You think putting yourself first on a piece of metal is going to make him want you back? You are pathetic!"

Several wealthy guests waiting for their cars turned to stare. The tension spiked instantly.

August strode ddown the steps, his face dark with anger. He saw the plate. His massive ego immediately aligned with Allena's delusion. He thought Elisa was clinging to him.

"Change the plate, Elisa," August commanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Don't make me call the DMV commissioner and have it forcibly revoked.Stop embarrassing yourself."

Elisa stood perfectly still.

She looked at Allena's red, screaming face. She looked at August's arrogant, demanding posture.

A wave of absolute, freezing disgust washed over her. They were so consumed by their own narcissism that they couldn't comprehend a world where they weren't the center of her universe.

Elisa slowly pulled her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose. Her black eyes locked onto Allena.

"Matching?" Elisa said. Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried a lethal, cutting edge.

She let out a short, hollow laugh.

"01 designates the primary independent node of the Aethel Al core," Elisa explained, her tone dripping with academic condescension. "It has nothing to do with your walking ATM machine."

Allena's face flushed darker. "Liar! You're just a desperate, clinging-"

"And as for who is desperate," Elisa cut her off, her voice suddenly rising, ringing out clearly across the valet zone for every single guest to hear.

Elisa took a step forward, invading Allena's space. She looked Allena dead in the eye, her lips curling into a smile of pure, venomous cruelty.

"By what authority are you giving me orders?" Elisa asked loudly.

She paused, letting the silence stretch for one agonizing second.

"Is it because you're my... future sister-in-law?"

The words detonated like a bomb in the middle of the crowd.

Future sister-in-law.③

Everyone in that social circle knew Allena had originally been engaged to August's younger cousin,Julian. August had stolen her. It was the family's dirtiest, most shameful secret, heavily supopressed by PR.

Elisa had just ripped the bandage off in front of fifty of New York's most powerful gossips.

Allena gasped, stumbling backward as if she had been physically shot. The blood drained from her face, leaving her looking like a corpse. She covered her mouth, a humiliated sob tearing from her throat.

August's eyes went completely black.

The public exposure of his incestuous betrayal shattered his control. He let out a roar of fury and lunged forward. His massive frame completely eclipsed the ambient streetlights, casting a terrifying, violent shadow over her. He didn't strike her-even in his blinding rage, a microscopic sliver of his corporate self-preservation held back the physical blow. Instead, he stopped inches from her chest, raising his hand and pointing his thick index finger so close to her face she could feel the heat radiating from his skin. His jaw locked, the muscles twitching violently as he spoke through clenched, grinding teeth.

"You say one more word," August hissed, his voice a guttural, vibrating threat that promised absolute destruction. "Just one more word."

Elisa didn't flinch. She didn't step back.

She tilted her chin up, staring directly into his violent eyes.

"Do it," Elisa whispered, her voice absolute ice. "Hit me.I can see you want to. Do it right here under the lights. The Wall Street Journal will have the photos of the Chambers CEO assaulting his wife on the front

page by 6:00 AM. Your stock will hemorrhage billions."(

August's hand froze mid-air, the finger trembling with the suppressed urge to wrap around her throat.

Elisa let out a disgusted scoff. She reached out, shoved Allena's trembling hand off her car, and pulled the door open.

She slid into the driver's seat.

The Porsche's engine roared to life, drowning out Allena's sobs. Elisa slammed the car into gear and rocketed away from the curb, leaving August standing frozen with his hand in the air, surrounded by the judging whispers of the elite.
