Chapter 49
No.1
Elisa's Porsche tore down the empty avenue, the streetlights reflecting off the sleek grey hood in rapid, rhythmic flashes.
She approached a red light at a major intersection and eased on the carbon-ceramic brakes. The car came to a smooth, aggressive halt.
She exhaled a long, slow breath, the tension leaving her shoulders. She reached up to adjust the rearview mirror.
As the mirror tilted, it caught the reflection of the valet zone she had just left, magnified by the long straight avenue behind her.
In the small rectangular glass, Elisa watched a silent, pathetic pantomime play out under the harsh halogen lights.
August was standing by the curb, his massive frame hunched over. He had both arms wrapped tightly around Allena.
Allena was in the middle of a full-blown, hysterical meltdown. Her body was wracked with violent, theatrical sobs. She was beating her small fists against August's chest, her face buried in his expensive suit, acting as if she had just survived a brutal physical assault.

August wasn't angry at her for causing the scene. He wasn't embarrassed by the whispers of the crowd still watching them.
He looked terrified.
He was kissing the top of her head, his mouth moving rapidly in desperate, pleading apologies. He was begging the woman who had ruined his family reputation to forgive him for not protecting her from the truth.
Elisa watched his complete, humiliating subjugation.
Her fingers rested lightly on the steering wheel. She felt no jealousy. She felt no heartbreak.
She felt a cold, clinical fascination. She was watching a billionaire dismantle his own empire, brick by brick, for a woman who was nothing more than a parasitic void.
The light turned green. Elisa pressed the accelerator, leaving the pathetic scene behind in the dark.

Back at the valet stand, August's Aston Martin finally pulled up.
He practically carried Allena into the passenger seat, slamming the door shut to cut off the staring eyes of the crowd. He sprinted around the hood and slid into the driver's seat.
The cabin was thick with the sound of Allena's hyperventilation.
"She called me that... she called me that in front of everyone!" Allena shrieked, her voice cracking. She clawed at her own arms, her eyes wild. "They were all laughing at me, August! They all think I'm trash!"
"They don't think that," August lied, his voice tight with panic. He reached out to grab her hands, trying to stop her from scratching herself. "I'll handle them.I'll destroy anyone who repeats it."
Allena violently ripped her hands out of his grasp.
"It's the car!" Allena screamed, pointing a shaking finger at the windshield. "It's that damn license plate!

She's mocking us! She's showing everyone she's still his wife! I can't take it, August! I can't!"
August swallowed hard. His logical brain knew the plate was just an Al designation. But looking at Allena's tear-streaked, devastated face, logic evaporated. He was consumed by the primal, desperate need to stop her crying.
"I'll make her change it," August promised frantically.
"No!" Allena sobbed, burying her face in her hands."That's not enough! I want to crush her! I want everyone to know I am the one who matters!"
She looked up, her eyes suddenly hardening with a vicious, demanding light.
"I want a plate," Allena demanded, hervoice dropping to a harsh whisper. "I want the most exclusive plate in the state. I want the single 'A'. I want everyone to know you moved heaven and earth for me."
August froze.
No.5
In New York, single-letter license plates were mythical. They were strictly reserved for the highest
echelons of political royalty-governors, senators,old-money dynasties that had built the city. To demand one for a mistress was not just arrogant; it was a gross, highly visible abuse of political capital. It would draw the scrutiny of the press and the fury of the old-money establishment.
He hesitated for one second.
Allena saw the hesitation. Her lower lip trembled, and a fresh wave of tears spilled over her cheeks. "You don't love me. You won't even do this one thing for me."
The tears were the catalyst, but as August stared at her crying face, another darker, more selfish motivation crystallized in his mind. He heard Alastair Cromwell's mocking, aristocratic voice echoing in his ears from the reception hall, publicly emasculating him, questioning his virility and his power. The whispers of the medical elite still burned his pride. He needed a weapon. He needed a monument. He needed to execute a flex of power so massive, so undeniably corrupt and untouchable, that it would force the entire city to bow to him again. Securing that mythical plate wasn't just about drying Allena's tears; it was about violently reclaiming his throne and
proving to every bastard in New York that he was still the undisputed king of the concrete jungle.
"Okay," August said instantly, his voice rushing out in a desperate breath. "Okay. I'll get it. I'll call the Governor's office tomorrow morning. I'll call in the favors. You'll have the 'A' plate by the end of the week."

Allena's sobs stopped instantly. A slow, triumphant smile spread across her face. She leaned over the center console and pressed her wet cheek against his shoulder.
"I love you, August," she whispered.
August let out a shaky breath, wrapping his arm around her. He had just traded a massive piece of his family's political armor for a smile. The influence his father, Baron, had spent a lifetime cultivating-the quiet, iron-clad favors that were the true foundation of their power-was being cashed in like a cheap poker chip to soothe a tantrum. It was more than foolish; it was a betrayal of his entire lineage.
Miles away, Elisa walked into her quiet, secure apartment.

She kicked off her heels, poured a glass of heavy red wine, and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city.
She took a sip, the dark liquid staining her lips. She looked down at the grid of lights below.

She knew August. She knew exactly how he would react toAllena's tears. He would overcompensate. He would do something incredibly loud, incredibly stupid, and incredibly public to prove his devotion.
Elisa raised her glass to the empty room.
"Burn," she whispered into the silence.
